It's in the jeans
What would you say is the most versatile item of clothing? Maybe your favourite LBD, but your husband can't wear that. What about your classic woollen winter coat? No wait, your kids can't wear that. There are very few pieces of clothing that can be worn by every age, both sexes and on numerous occasions from a Sunday stroll in the park to an evening on the town with the girls.
So what's the answer? Jeans. Jeans have come a long way in their lifetime. They started life as workman's clothes because they were hardwearing and cheap to produce. Then the US Navy adopted denim for its sailors again because it lasted for ever, even on salty-sea soaked naval vessels. But denim didn’t enter the mainstream until James Dean donned a pair in “Rebel Without A Cause” and from then on denim jeans were synonymous with cool, trendy types who were destined to rebel.
Over the decades jeans have gone through all kinds of mutations from flared to tapered, straight to bootcut, baggy to tight fitting and even coloured and patterned. Denim is no longer just used for jeans; denim shirts, skirts, waistcoats and the latest trend, jeggings, are available across the high street. You can now break the age-old rule of double denim as celebrities have been spotted wearing denim shirts and jeans.
Jeans are popular items of clothing for children too because they seem to last forever, even the cheaper pairs. In fact, you are more likely to have to replace your kid's denims because they have grown out of them rather than worn them out, even if they are the most adventurous of children.
The sheer number of styles means there are jeans for every occasion. A dark pair of skinnies looks great with heels and a luscious top for a Friday night; a light-coloured pair of flares are the latest denim trend to get a rebirth and are perfect for Saturday shopping trips. You can even get away with wearing a straight-legged pair to the office and a denim skirt is the ultimate must have for sunny Sundays in the park.
Men and kids also have myriad styles to choose from so if your daughter is a little princess or an exploring tomboy there is a style to suit her.
